Chapter 042: Listening (Vizhiyappan's Translation)

0411.  செல்வத்துள் செல்வம் செவிச்செல்வம் அச்செல்வம்
           செல்வத்துள் எல்லாம் தலை

           Listening is wealth among wealths; that wealth
           is primary of all wealths

           Vizhiyappan's Commentary: The wealth called knowledge that results from listening, is one 
           among the variety of wealths; that wealth is the primary of all wealths.

           The relationship called parents that is obtained from birth, is one among the various 
           relationships; that relationship is the best of all relationships.

0412.  செவிக்குண வில்லாத போழ்து சிறிது
           வயிற்றுக்கும் ஈயப் படும்

           When there is no food for ear,
           little is fed to stomach

           Vizhiyappan's Commentary: When there is nothing to listen, which is food for the ear; a little 
           should be fed to the stomach, so as to continue the listening.

           When there is no thought process, which is happiness for the mind; the body is given enough 
           happiness, so as to enhance the thought process.

0413.  
செவியுணவிற் கேள்வி யுடையார் அவியுணவின்
           ஆன்றாரோ டொப்பர் நிலத்து

           Who has attention, i.e. food for ear, is alike
           almighty having food from Yagna

           Vizhiyappan's Commentary: On the earth, who has the attention that is food for ear; are like 
           the almighty who has food from things such as ghee poured in Yagna.

           On the society, who practice the public-welfare that gives the bliss; are like the nature that 
           provide the elements such as cell in the body.

4.  
கற்றில னாயினுங் கேட்க அஃதொருவற்கு
           ஒற்கத்தின் ஊற்றாந் துணை

           Even if uneducated, do listen; it will
           be crutch when exhausted

           Vizhiyappan's Commentary: Even if someone is uneducated, they should develop listening-
           knowledge; that will support them like "crutch" during their exhaustion.

           Even if someone do not do public-work, they should support those who do such works; that 
           will give them the mental strength like "life-force" at their deathbed.

0415.  
இழுக்கல் உடையுழி ஊற்றுக்கோல் அற்றே
           ஒழுக்க முடையார்வாய்ச் சொல்

           Speech by the disciplined scholars is
           like crutch in slippery place

           Vizhiyappan's Commentary: The listening-knowledge gained from the speech of 
           disciplined scholars, is like the crutch that is useful to stand firmly at the slippery place.

           The true-wisdom learned through the guidance of graceful guru, is like the floater that helps 
           reaching the shore without drowning in the extremely deep ocean.

0416.  
எனைத்தானும் நல்லவை கேட்க அனைத்தானும்
           ஆன்ற பெருமை தரும்

           Listening as much good as possible,
           return equivalently stable glory

           Vizhiyappan's Commentary: We should listen as much good things as possible and develop 
           the rational; then the obtained stable glory will be up to the extent of that development.

           We should chose as many ethical people as possible and continue the relationship; then the  
           resulted best birth-benefit will be up to the level of that continuation.

0417.  
பிழைத்துணர்ந்தும் பேதைமை சொல்லார் இழைத்துணர்ந்து
           ஈண்டிய கேள்வி யவர்

           Who listen and explore, won’t speak ignoramus
           even with misinterpretation

           Vizhiyappan's Commentary: Those who have obtained deep knowledge with the search of 
           listening; will not speak in an ignoramus way, even if they have misinterpreted understanding.

           Those who have completely implemented themselves in maintaining the public-welfare; will 
           not criticize with selfish intention, even if the opponent parties have defect.

0418.  கேட்பினுங் கேளாத் தகையவே கேள்வியால்
           தோட்கப் படாத செவி

           The ear that isn’t pierced by listening, is
           considered deaf even it hears

           Vizhiyappan's Commentary: Ears of those who could not develop the listening-knowledge by 
           the investment called listening, are felt as inaudible ears though they have capacity to hear.

           Brain of those who could not harvest the rational by the agriculture called thought-process, is 
           equivalent to the dead brain though it is in operating condition.

0419.  நுணங்கிய கேள்விய ரல்லார் வணங்கிய
           வாயின ராதல் அரிது

           Those who haven’t depth listening, cannot
           become as kindly spoken

           Vizhiyappan's Commentary: Those who do not have the depth analysis of listening-
           knowledge, can hardly become kindly spoken so as to be pleased by others.

           Those who do not have the excellent understanding with the relationships, can hardly create 
           superior generations so as to be praised by the society.

0420.  செவியிற் சுவையுணரா வாயுணர்வின் மாக்கள்
           அவியினும் வாழினும் என்

           What if, who don’t feel taste of ear but
           of mouth, either die or live?

           Vizhiyappan's Commentary: What is the benefit, if those who do not realize the taste of 
           listening-knowledge that is food for the ear; but realize only the taste of mouth, either die or 
           live?

           What is the difference, if those who do not understand the magnificence of agriculture that is 
           life of the world; but understand only the magnificence of money, either get superior or 
           inferior?
